In a disappointing turn of events for fans of Neil Patrick Harris’ divorce comedy – Uncoupled. Showtime has decided against renewing it for a second season. The cable network’s choice comes after it stepped in to rescue the series when it was initially canceled by Netflix, according to a report from our sister site Deadline.
Uncoupled centered around NPH’s character, Michael Lawson, a New York City real estate agent who finds himself suddenly single after being unceremoniously dumped by his longtime boyfriend, Colin McKenna. The first season, consisting of eight episodes, concluded with a cliffhanger as Colin returned to their apartment, expressing regret over his decision to leave Michael.
Executive producer Jeffrey Richman revealed to TVLine the deliberate decision to leave Michael and Colin’s final encounter open-ended, stating, “We enjoy painting ourselves into a corner.” This unresolved conclusion left viewers eager for a potential second season to provide closure to the characters’ storylines.
The season finale of Uncoupled also introduced several twists, including Michael’s coworker Suzanne reconnecting with her son’s father, Michael’s best friend Stanley disclosing his battle with breast cancer, and Billy, the group’s resident “fun one,” deciding to take a more serious approach to love and life.
Alongside Neil Patrick Harris, the series featured a talented ensemble cast, including Tuc Watkins as Colin, Tisha Campbell as Suzanne, Brooks Ashmanskas as Stanley, Emerson Brooks as Billy, and Marcia Gay Harden as Claire.
Uncoupled was executive-produced by creators Jeffrey Richman and Darren Star, in addition to NPH and Lilly Burns. Notably, Darren Star is also behind the hit Netflix series Emily in Paris, which has already been renewed for a fourth season.
While fans may be disappointed by Showtime’s decision to not proceed with a second season of Uncoupled, the series’ brief run left a lasting impression with its blend of humor and heartfelt moments. As viewers bid farewell to Michael and his friends, they are left to wonder what could have been for these engaging characters in future seasons that will now remain a mystery for everyone.
